  • Chili Pepper consumption impact on CVD and CVA

David Sinclair Twittered on a JACC article on chili pepper consumption impact on all cause mortality, CVD and CVAs today. Given that most versions of the Mediterranean diet appear to be fairly high carb, I had always felt confused about the longevity associated with it. If this proves valid (it is based on food recall questionnaires) it could provide an interesting explanation. My wife says this suggests I am a candidate for long life.

That's interesting. I've often wondered if spicy (specifically hot) foods induce hormesis. Perhaps that could be a mechanism.

As far as the carbohydrate level of the so called Mediterranean Diet and longevity goes, that would be in agreement with common medical knowledge. Low carb association with longevity is somewhat of a fringe, albeit one I am sympathetic to based on my own experience with several dietary patterns. After two years of strict whole foods plant based, I was a wreck. Hence my skepticism of the commonly accepted knowledge base.

Good points. It depends on what you mean by "commonly accepted knowledge base". Low carb is also commonly accepted. At this point, it may be more popular than the pant-based doctrines. In my view, it's can be another red herring; you can go completely keto and completely vegan at the same time.

Maybe we have different perspectives, as I'm a patient, not a medical professional. I have found it extremely difficult to find a medical professional (ex-Internet) to say anything positive about low carb. My PCP has gone from negative to neutral after watching me drop 45lbs. The specialists I see are all negative. And I tend to think my experience is the norm.

If that was the case, then shouldn't Indians be having long lifespan?

Do you remember David Meinz, the nutritionist that does TheHealthyLifeSummit and CIMT access series? Over teh past 2 years, his cardiologist has gone low carb. But yes, it's not very popular - yet.
