  • Update from Cleveland Clinic on statin intolerance, bempedoic acid, and Lp(a)

I thought that a relatively recent update from Cleveland Clinic on lipid therapies was interesting. The two moderators cover a lot of topics starting off with a long discussion on statin intolerance and adjustments with niacin and PCSK9 inhibitors use at times. They next talk about the CLEAR trial for bempedoic acid which is a new drug expected to get FDA approval by next Summer or so. I was intrigued by the strong anti-inflammatory properties of bempedoic acid (stronger than statins) in addition to the lack of myalgia issues because it only acts in the liver (statins secondarily can act in muscle tissue causing myalgia issues in some patients). One of the moderators made an interesting point of the potential for weekly dosing of three drugs together (5 mg rosuvastatin, bempedoic acid and ezetimibe). They do strongly emphasize that diet and lifestyle are keys to health rather than just depending upon drugs. The last part covers the IONIS drug trial for lowering Lp(a). From what the moderators said it appears that Cleveland Clinic will be running that trial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx7A2DcpZ7k

I had never heard of bempedoic acid before watching this video. Here is some info for those who are interested in learning more.
