  • Shulman talk on Insulin Resistance posted by Ivor Cummins

Ivor Cummins recently posted a talk that is the best that I have ever heard in a detailed way about Insulin Resistance. The long and short of it is that Insulin Resistance is due to the accumulation of fat in liver and muscle cells. The detailed metabolic steps might cause some to lose interest, but please hang in there if you start at the beginning and get overwhelmed with the details. At that point just skip to the 31:45-39:40 section where the real take aways are located. He discusses how aging and mitochondrial decrease in efficiency play an inevitable role in Insulin Resistance as we age. There is a lot of discussion about Type 2 Diabetes and how to improve the metabolism to reverse it. Don't get too hung up over the speaker's affiliation with Big Pharma and talking about drug targets. Just focus on the metabolism parts. It is easy to see why fasting/exercise and not drugs is a superior fix to T2D, however some drugs like TZDs do some good in reducing Insulin Resistance while increasing weight by shoving some of those excess lipids into fat cells rather than liver and muscle cells.
